Tattoo Appointment Checklist

You have chosen your design, booked your artist, and the appointment date is approaching. Now what? Proper preparation can make the difference between a smooth, enjoyable session and an unnecessarily stressful one. Use this checklist to make sure you are fully ready for your tattoo day in Rexburg.

One Week Before Your Appointment

  • Finalize your design details. If you have any last-minute thoughts on the design, communicate them to your artist now rather than waiting until the day of. Changes are much easier to accommodate with advance notice.
  • Stay hydrated consistently. Hydrated skin accepts ink more evenly. Start drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment.
  • Moisturize the area. Apply unscented lotion to the skin where you will be tattooed. Supple, well-moisturized skin is easier for your artist to work with.
  • Avoid sunburn at all costs. Sunburned or peeling skin cannot be tattooed. Even if your appointment is during Rexburg's colder months, be cautious of any sun exposure to the tattoo area.
  • Gather payment. Confirm the estimated cost and have your payment ready, including cash for a tip if the studio does not accept tips on card.

The Night Before

  • Get a full night of sleep. Aim for at least seven to eight hours. Your body handles pain better when well-rested, and fatigue can make you feel faint during longer sessions.
  • Do not drink alcohol. Alcohol thins your blood and can increase bleeding during the tattoo process. Skip the drinks for at least 24 hours before your appointment.
  • Lay out your outfit. Choose comfortable, loose-fitting clothes that provide easy access to the area being tattooed. If it is your arm, a tank top works perfectly. For leg tattoos, wear shorts or pants with wide legs.
  • Shower and keep the area clean. Arrive with clean skin free of lotions, oils, or self-tanner on the tattoo area. Your artist needs to apply the stencil to clean, dry skin.
  • Charge your phone and download entertainment. Longer sessions mean downtime. Podcasts, music, or audiobooks help pass the time comfortably.

The Morning Of

  • Eat a substantial meal. A full stomach helps stabilize your blood sugar during the session. Low blood sugar is the most common reason people feel dizzy or faint in the chair. Eat protein, complex carbs, and healthy fats.
  • Skip excessive caffeine. A regular morning coffee is fine, but do not overdo it. Too much caffeine can increase anxiety and make you jittery, which makes it harder to sit still.
  • Bring snacks and water. For sessions over an hour, pack granola bars, fruit, or other portable snacks along with a water bottle. Most Rexburg studios are fine with you eating during breaks.
  • Apply deodorant but skip perfume or cologne. Your artist will be working in close proximity. Deodorant is courteous; strong fragrances are not.
  • Arrive five to ten minutes early. This gives you time to fill out paperwork, use the restroom, and settle your nerves before the session begins.

What to Bring

  • Valid photo ID — required by Idaho law
  • Payment method — cash, card, or both
  • Reference images — on your phone or printed out
  • Snacks and a water bottle
  • Headphones — for personal entertainment
  • A light jacket or blanket — tattoo shops can be cool, and adrenaline can cause chills
  • Cash for tipping

What NOT to Do

  • Do not take blood-thinning medications unless prescribed by a doctor. This includes aspirin and ibuprofen. Acetaminophen is a better choice if you need pain relief.
  • Do not bring a crowd. One supportive friend is usually welcome. A group of four will likely not be appreciated by the artist or other clients in the studio.
  • Do not shave the area yourself. Your artist will prep the skin properly. Self-shaving can cause irritation or razor bumps that complicate the tattoo process.
  • Do not arrive under the influence. Reputable shops including Synergy Tattoo in Rexburg will turn away clients who are visibly intoxicated. It is a safety concern and can affect your ability to consent.

During the Session

Once you are in the chair, relax as much as possible. Breathe steadily. Let your artist know if you need a break. Stay as still as you can while the needle is working, and save conversations for natural pauses. Trust the process and enjoy watching your new art come to life.

With the right preparation, your tattoo appointment can be an exciting and positive experience. Use this checklist and you will walk into your Rexburg studio feeling completely ready.
